Drone Roof Inspections: A Thermal Niche Worth Learning
Real-estate photography is the crowded lane. This one is quieter, and the day rates published by inspection firms run higher: thermal roof inspection. A drone with an infrared camera can find water trapped inside a flat roof. You can't see that damage from the ground. The people who own the roof will pay real money for it.

Why it pays more than photography
Thermal inspection isn't a pretty picture. It's actionable data. A roof-moisture map shows a facility manager exactly where to repair instead of replacing the whole roof. That's often a five-figure saving. The work is specialized and it produces a decision, so it commands premium pricing per site. Much of it is recurring too (annual inspections).
How a thermal roof survey actually works
Water trapped in roof insulation stores heat and gives itself away. Fly a clear, calm, dry evening after a sunny day, straight down (nadir), and the wet areas glow warm as the dry roof cools around them. The pattern outlines the damage. The key idea here is delta-T: you need a temperature difference for anything to show. That's why timing is everything.
What you need
- Part 107 (it's commercial work). Start with our Part 107 course.
- A radiometric thermal drone. That means one that records a temperature per pixel, not just a thermal-looking image.
- Thermography know-how. You'll want to understand emissivity and reflected temperature, the #1 source of false readings. You also need to capture clean data and read an anomaly without crying "defect" at every warm spot.
- Certification for credibility. A thermography certification (e.g., ASNT SNT-TC-1A or an sUAS thermographer program) is often expected, and it builds trust with clients.
Who pays for it
Facility and property managers. Commercial roofers use it to scope repairs and win bids. Building owners doing energy audits want it too. The same thermal skills carry over to solar-panel inspection and building envelopes. It's a whole family of high-value work.
The catch (and the opportunity)
Thermal has a learning curve. Emissivity, timing, interpretation, reporting. So it's worth knowing what the training and equipment actually cost, and how the work is priced.
